Flood, or furrow, irrigation is a form of irrigation that hasn't changed much since its origin in ancient times.
Basically, farmers allow water to flow through furrows in the ground, directly watering the crops.
Although it's not the most efficient of irrigation techniques, it's common because it's inexpensive and simple.
